Equipped To Survive Presents Stay Alive An Independent ThinkQuest Student Project |
You should try to keep out of the wind, rain, sun, and be able to rest as much as possible; this is essential to survival. You can use natural shelters, such as caves, rocky overhangs, thickets, etc... or build your own. The lean-to shelter is the easiest to build. All that is required is branches and leaves. Fern fronds also help waterproof the roof.
In areas where trees are not available, a shelter can be built with mud bricks cut out of turf. Igloos are also a good type of shelter. A simple alternative to the igloo can be built by clumping backpacks together, then packing snow on top of and around the backpacks. When the layer of snow is deep enough, dig a doorway to the backpacks, carefully remove them, and excavate the cabin inside to a comfortable dimension.
