Tools

It's always a good idea to have some basic cutting tools with you; a pocketknife and wire saw are essentials. A good heavy-duty knife (such as the kukri or machete) is also recommended. If you are caught in the wilderness without tools, here are some improvised alternatives you can use:

 

  1. By dropping a lump of flint on a rock, you can obtain a sharp edge which can be used for cutting and for hammering (on the other side)
  2. A very sharp, strong bamboo shovel can be crafted by cutting a section of bamboo stem.
  3. You can use a broken piece of glass as a knife by wrapping one end with cloth to make a handle.
